  迄今为止,绝大多数新媒介的社会和文化理论的主要关注点都集中于它们如何给传播带来革命性变化,而非此类媒介所具备的前所未有的数据存储和提取能力。然而,这种偏颇并不是一种新现象——如我们在第三章中所讨论过的——早在20世纪40年代后期,香农和韦弗的信息科学就将数据传递和接收——而非存储和建档——的技术手段作为其考察的核心。由于这一显而易见的差异,本章将着眼于信息存储的问题,并尤其关注数字媒介时代的档案是如何得以概念化的这一问题。我们的初步答案是,今天的档案正日益呈现网络化结构,这种结构使得前所未有的大量数据得以存储、获取和加速传播。作为物质或虚拟技术,这类档案同样也具有其基础的、概念化设计,尽管它们并非每次都按预先设计运行。上述这些相关的内容——概念化的、物质的和/或虚拟的——之间的联系将是本章的核心内容。

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no days, no hours or minutes. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.

Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.

Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.

So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will all expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.

It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived.

It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Your gender, skin color, ethnicity will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave.

What will matter is not your success, but your significance.

What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.

What will matter is not your competence, but your character.

What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.

What will matter is not your memories, but the memories of those who loved you.

What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.

It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.

Choose to live a life that matters.

三、 家庭电影的档案属性与文本价值

  综上所述,家庭电影具有某种程度的私密性,是属于不公开的家庭档案,是纯粹属于家庭内的共同记忆,是纯粹为了家庭所生产的。而也正是因为这样的纯粹性,让家庭电影在马克费罗Mark Ferro的“以电影作为一种历史档案”(Ferro, M., 2008)的视野下[5],要比一般官方的宣传影片、民间的商业电影甚至是少数充满作者色彩的纪录片、艺术电影要有更高的历史档案价值。[6]因为家庭电影正正就是生成于家庭内部,是存在于民间,是社会中的平民百姓自己纪录、自己选择留存的关于自己生活的纪实活动音像档案。因此家庭电影能更真实地反应社会大众的真实生活样貌,以及反应社会大众的价值观,让其文献参考价值远高于其它音像档案。
